Localization of Atpase in Rotifer Cilia

چکیده
Considerable da ta have been accumulated on the fine s t ructure of cilia, sperm tails, and flagella (4, 5) bu t the contract i le mechanism in these structures has yet to be elucidated. T he split t ing of phospha te from A T P (8) and the recognit ion of ATPase activity in myosin (2) have been associated wi th muscular contractili ty. A na tura l sequel to these observations was an a t t empt to establish a comparab le association in vibrat i le systems (7, 1, 2). We have found recently (6) tha t at least in the rotifer there is a peculiar or ienta t ion of the per ipheral filaments when viewed in true cross-section. W h e n per ipheral filaments 9 to 4 are sharply out l ined in normal sections, filaments 5 to 8 are disoriented, or the converse may occur. This suggests the possibility tha t while half of the per ipheral filaments is in extension the other hal f is in contract ion. In this study we have a t tempted to de termine whe the r or not ATPase shows a dist r ibut ion consistent with the s t ructural bilateral asymmetry of rotifer cilia.

A spiral sleeve in rotifer cilia tips.
The fine structure of rotifer coronal cilia has been studied by Lansing & Lamy (1961), and Scholtyseck & Danneel (1962), who reported that they possessed the familiar structures common to all cilia. Cilia are also present in the gut of rotifers, where they stir the contents, and drive them along. This note describes an unusual structure in the tips of the intestinal cilia of the rotifer, Philod...
متن کاملO-10: A Marked Animal-Vegetal Polarity in The Localization of Na+,K+-ATPase Activity and Its Down-Regulation Following Progesterone-Induced Maturation
Background: Polarized cells are key to the process of differentiation. Xenopus oocyte is a polarized cell that has complete blue-print to differentiate 3 germ layers following fertilization, as key determinant molecules (Proteins and RNAs) are asymmetrically localized. The objective of this work was to localize Na+, K+-ATPase activity along animal-vegetal axis of polarized Xenopus oocyte and fo...
متن کاملHistochemical study of the olfactory rosette of Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus, 1758)
The distribution and localization of acid and neutral mucins in various cells lining the olfactory epithelium of Cyprinus carpio have been studied histochemically by employing the PAS-AB technique. Variations in the localization of protein in different cells lining the olfactory epithelium have been correlated with the functional significance of the region concerned. Intense localization of t...
متن کاملFine Structure of the Cilia of Rotifers
The fine structure of the coronal cilia of the rotifer Philodina citrina has been studied in detail. Specimens were fixed with OsO(4) and embedded in butyl-methyl methacrylate, Epon 812, or Vestopal and sectioned with a Porter-Blum microtome. The details of structure of the rootlets, basal bodies, basal plates, and free cilia are described. The general structure of the rotifer ciliary apparatus...
متن کاملCiliary Ion Channels: Location, Location, Location
The elegant waveforms of motile cilia derive from temporal and spatial regulation of dynein-driven microtubule sliding. A new study reveals the surprising localization of the channel responsible for waveform switch.
